My Infinity Net

Yayoi Kusama, Detail of Infinity Net Painting, c1960s, Oil on canvas.

Yayoi Kusama (1929- ) is a Japanese artist whose work spans paintings, sculptures, installations, public works, performance art, collage--and they're all connected through an obsession with pattern, repetition, and accumulation. One theme prominent in her paintings is the "infinity net," a network of polka dots that fills an entire canvas. Instead of painting circles for each dot, Kusama first paints a solid background, then uses a small brush to carefully paint the outline of a polka dot that connects one to another to form a continuous "net."

As I got lost staring into Kusama's Infinity Net Painting, I began thinking about nets in general, and I discovered that I love everything about them. I love their texture, their pattern, their malleable shape. Leap and the net will appear! is one of my favorite sayings. Perhaps this is why, I just had to get this netted dress for the Spring/Summer...

My fashionista friend, H., introduced me to a lovely little boutique in Fort Greene, BK, called "Cloth." It was love at first touch when I ran my fingers through the beautiful netted texture of this dress. Crocheted dresses have a tendency to look frumpy, but not this one--special about it is the form fitting lower half, it looks much better on. Thoughtfully constructed, I'm excited to interchange different colored chemises underneath.

A bonus accessory, a $3 art deco ring from the Brooklyn Flea!
